It carried me until I was able to hug him and see this smile in person.

Darkest Hours to Highest Praises (Brian's Perspective)

Thank you again for being there for us, watching over our family, and for your prayers while the Lord, Ethan, and I endured the trial we faced last week. The specialist look at Ethan’s ears and the Lord once again showed us how great, wonderful, amazing, and protecting He can be. The specialist informed us that there is nothing more than a minor laceration in Ethan’s left ear and that neither of his ear drums have been ruptured.

The night of the accident I kept beating myself up over and over again because I knew how the accident happened but could not recall exactly what I did to prevent it or protect Ethan. I kept asking myself how Ethan and I got separated in the accident and how I failed to protect him or shield him with my own body or something. I realize now that even though I am not Superman we have and serve a Super God. It wasn't until the morning after when all the excitement settled down that Ethan shared that he didn’t think he was still on the four wheeler when it rolled over and that it did not roll over him and after speaking to the other individuals that were there it was confirmed that when the four wheeler rolled over the only person still on it was me. We were both thrown off the vehicle, I was thrown down the hill and able to get to my feet to avoid the four wheeler that was following me and Ethan was thrown up hill. My hunting buddy Richard that we are up here with basically said “Other than Gods divine intervention he cannot explain how Ethan and I were removed from harm’s way, we witnessed a miracle yesterday”. According to the laws of physics that four wheeler should have rolled right over the top of both of us and there is no earthly scientific explanation for how a 60lb eight year old boy that is behind his 200lb father on a four wheeler that is starting its decent down the hill defies gravity and gets tossed up hill.

Ethan is still not sure how he got off the four wheeler. All he remembers is hitting the ground and hitting his head. I have explained to him that there is only one explanation and that is God. And that even though we both got some lumps and bruises it was only by Gods divine intervention that we were able to walk away.

We have decided that we are not going to let the accident ruin the wonderful trip that we have had and cloud the memories of the time we have had on this trip together. That we will continue to focus on the plans that God has for us and why we are here.

So to focus on the positive:

Ethan’s first turkey (see previous posts for pics):

For you gents that don’t turkey hunt. The largest turkey bagged in this region was 28lb. To get a turkey in itself is a big deal. To get one on your first hunt is a bigger deal. To get a trophy your first time is even a bigger deal. This was my forth time turkey hunting and Ethan’s first. This is my first time getting a turkey as well so to let the devil take the joy of Ethan and I getting our first turkey together we just can’t do.

Praise God and please continue to pray for us. Pray that we have a safe travels home.

Darkest Hours to Highest Praises (Part 3)

Pastor Mike and Stacy arrived sometime around 9 and gathered everyone to the living room to pray.

As Mike was praying my phone rang and it was Brian.

We all held our breath as Brian began to share the update with us…And he shared the BEST update...

Ethan was stable and he was going to be OK.

He wasn’t just OK, he managed to escape the accident with very minor injuries and some decent bangs and bruises.

We were able to put the call on speaker and Ethan spoke to everyone in the room bringing us all to tears.

We rejoiced and praised God Almighty who we KNOW protected Ethan and spared us from our worst fears.

By the grace of God we received a miracle and a second chance.

Much like the pain I felt deep within my soul the same is true for the JOY, relief and absolute gratitude. My heart is overflowing and my life is forever changed.

Now more than ever before I am a proud and THANKFUL momma of FOUR!

Hugs your babies tight and say I love you A LOT.

Darkest Hours to Highest Praises (Part 2)

On the eve of their last Kentucky night while enjoying their last ride on the four wheeler, the unthinkable happened.

Brian and Ethan were in a horrible accident! Brian remembers being thrown from the four wheeler and he was sure Ethan was thrown as well.

When Brian managed to get on his feet he called out for Ethan. Ethan returned the call with a hurt cry. Brian in sheer fear ran over to his son who was bleeding from his ear and the back of his head. When Brian asked if he was ok Ethan shook his head no. Brian could see the fear in his eyes and knew he felt the same fear.

The hour long ride back to civialization felt like an eternity. Brian rested Ethan on his chest and together they sang songs, recalled past hunting trips and prayed. All in an effort to keep Ethan conscience and Brian calm as they made their way out of the woods where their buddies had raced ahead and called for help.

Just moments after exiting the woods the paramedics and EMT’s arrived, they quickly assessed Ethan and determined he needed to be Trauma Hawked to Cabell Huntington Trauma Center.

However, that decision required Ethan be transported to another location where the helicopter could land safely and in addition it prohibited Brian from being with his son during the scariest moment of their lives.

Brian had to let the trauma team do their job and take his son.

One of the paramedics just happened to be getting off duty at the same time and offered to drive Brian to the hospital with lights on and speeding all the way.

It was during that car ride that Brian was finally able to call me. And it was THAT call that made my heart stop.

Brian (my rock!) was crying. His voice was shaky and his words were unclear.

After several attempts Brian was finally able to say "Ethan and I were in a terrible accident on the four wheeler and Ethan has been trauma hawked to a hospital an hour away. I'm trying to get there now".

I had no idea exactly what had happened. I remember the laundry room I was standing in was spinning so fast I wanted to fall. My chest hurt so bad because I had stopped breathing. When I consciously made an effort to take a breath the pain in my heart was so severe I thought it might explode.

I called my parents and my sister and mumbled something but honestly, I don't know what. My sister dropped everything and came over to collect my kids and bring them to her house where they stayed and prayed with my brother-in-law Curtis.

Stephanie then orchestrated a prayer vigil at my house. One by one, people I know and trust and love so very much started showing up at my house. She made and answered all calls, made and served coffee. She handled EVERYTHING. My only responsibility was to breath and believe me when I tell you that was quite a feat. Every breath pierced my aching heart.

I have never ever felt fear or pain in the depths of my soul as I did that Monday night.

Brian and Ethan started spring break a day early. After months of planning the boys boarded a plane thursday afternoon and headed to KY for an all boy hunting trip.

While both Brian and Ethan have hunted many times together this particular trip was special because it was the first time they took a plane and visited the breathtaking state of KY. It was also Ethan's first time turkey hunting. Both "boys" were beyond excited. So much so that for weeks leading up to the trip neither of them could concentrate on anything except the final details of their getway.

I *knew* this was going to be a wonderful and memorable trip for the man and the boy I loved so very much.

Two and half days into the trip through a calculated (and joint) effort Brian and Ethan bagged their first turkey.And what a turkey it was!!!!This turkey was 26lbs, had 1” Spurs, and proudly boasted a 10” Beard.

For those of you (like me :) that don’t turkey hunt, the largest turkey ever bagged in that region was 28lb. To get a turkey is a big deal. To get one on your first hunt is a bigger deal. To get a trophy turkey your first time is an even bigger deal. This was Brian's forth time turkey hunting and Ethan’s first. Together it was their first turkey!!

There were two and half days left of their trip and although they were having the time of their life they considered coming home a day early.

However, when they ran into difficulties renting a car early they decided to stay at camp and well...as the saying goes "boys WILL be boys!"

They rode four wheelers from morning till night. Exploring the camp, the beautiful country and the deep mountain roads.

The trip had proved to be everything they hoped it would be and more.

My "baby" boy is turning the BIG 5 tomorrow... I don't think he could be any happier. He's been waiting ALL year for this monumental event. His birthday wish is to be big like Ethan...and for a snake! YIKES...

~~~In honor of his special day we had a backyard birthday bash with his all of his favorites: his friends, the pool, of course water guns, cotton candy, a bounce house, pinata, and since his favorite meal is Taco's we had a huge taco spread for him and all his friends. It was a super great day celebrating my boy and his precious life.

And because I'm a sucker for that stunning smile of his, he even got that dang snake he wished for...

We had the most amazing, most relaxing, most wonderful Christmas (with one exception).

The day was just perfect (almost).

The kids woke up (after 9am!). We opened presents....

Sadie the techy girl received lots of gifts that needed to downloaded/uploaded, synched, etc.

Ethan is an official spy. Complete with glasses that allow him to see behind him, a watch that can record and video your conversations and a helicopter that looks like a helicopter but *really* its a cool spy tool that takes pictures in mid air.

Madison (still the princess) received lots of make up, movies, nail polish and for the wannabe hunter in her, she got a pink camouflage sleeping bag for their upcoming hunting trip.

Jake who wants so badly to be a BIG BOY received his very own (age appropriate) lap top. He LOVES LOVES LOVES it.

The kids were blessed beyond measure.

But the one thing nobody could deny was we MISSED Grandma and Grandpa. This was the kids first Christmas without you here and they NOTICED! It was weird. It was different. They missed, really missed, you being here. We all did.

We love you SO very much and can't wait for January to see you again.

It’s that time of year again…that time of year where I sit at my computer for hours trying to sum up the year’s news, events, mile stones and blessings in one short and sweet letter.

This year was especially difficult because we have had SO many of the above.

For starters our family has grown again. Most of you know about our Miracle Baby, Jacob! He is the most amazing, tender hearted yet spunky, with the BIGGEST smile EVER, sweet boy the Lord could have hand picked for our family. He has completed us and brought more JOY to our family than we could have ever imagined and definitely more than we can express in one short annual Christmas letter. Jake is indeed our biggest 2010 blessing but the blessings didn’t stop there…

Brian traveled to Haiti twice this year and is planning his 3rd trip before the years end. Ethan at his tender age of 8 is already mission minded and has a heart to serve the Lord in a capacity beyond his years. He will be going on his first mission’s trip THIS year. He is going to Haiti with Brian in just a few short days. I must confess that as his mom I am a “little bit” scared for him but mostly I am overjoyed that he has a servants heart and he WANTS to go with his daddy to deliver Christmas presents to the children living in an orphanage. I must also confess there is not much more that can make me more PROUD of my boy!

Madison our beautiful child ~also known as HOLLYWOOD~ has grown and blossomed so much this year. Almost all credit goes to her 2nd grade teacher. She has found a way to connect and relate to Madison like no one else. Madison adores her, LOVES school and wants to be a “cowgirl” like her teacher. So much so that she asked her daddy to buy her a pink rifle :). Of course those of you that know Brian, know that just tickled him inside and out. And as if that wasn’t enough the girl now wants to go hunting. OH MY!!! Needless to say Brian is in his Glory with his 3 mini hunters :)

Sadie on the other hand has NO interest in hunting or guns or even eating meat for that matter. In fact, she would be a vegan if we allowed her and she prays daily for safety for the “poor animals”. It is the sweetest thing ever!!! She has the biggest kindest heart of anyone I have ever known. She is tender and thoughtful, generous and giving. Forgiving and truly truly loves with Agape love. I hope to be half the person she is one day.

I am honored beyond words to be the Mother of these 4 kids. I will never know why I was chosen but I will forever be THANKFUL.

My life is so full that if I receive nothing more in 2011 I can honestly say I am so content, so happy, so at peace, so IN love and loved….

This has been a wonderful blessing filled year indeed. Oh!! I almost forgot Molly (our absolutely PERFECT dog) needed a play mate so when Brian found a stray pup on his job site he brought him home for Molly and the family. While Lincoln is not quite “perfect” he is perfect for us and we are most hopeful that Molly will be a good influence and help him quickly out grow some of his less than desirable puppy habits.

Well, I am certain I left out many many things but I do think I at least covered the big things. My 2011 resolution is to keep this blog better updated and when that fails you can always count on facebook for news about our Growing Garcia’s. :)

My Miracle Baby

Today we finalized the adoption of our of Miracle Baby ~ Jacob Thomas Garcia.

I now feel completely at peace sharing a piece of his amazing story and journey into our family.

Many of you know that our boy Ethan has prayed without ceasing for a baby brother since August of 2006. Long after Brian and I gave up on the possibility of adding to our family – Ethan kept praying.

Just recently he began praying specifically that his baby brother would come from Russia. Sadly, the relationship between Russia and the U.S. has been compromised over the years and even more so when the little boy in TN was returned to Russia by the women who adopted him.

Brian did his best to explain to Ethan that shy of a miracle his little brother would not be coming from Russia – if he was even to have a little brother.

So….Ethan prayed for a miracle! He prayed and asked God for a brother from Russia.

Just a few short weeks later I received an email from a long time friend. She had heard of a little boy who was adopted from Russia in November of 2009.

His former family had 2 biological children and felt called to adopt from Russia. They went through the long process and even traveled to Russia 3 times.

While in Russia they did not feel like they were to be his parents. They didn’t quite “get it” but they knew they were to complete the process and bring him home.

Several weeks after coming home from Russia with him they realized they were not bonding with him as they had with their biological children. They were kind to him. They nurtured and took care of him but they knew they were not his forever family and so they begin seeking placement for him.

I have to pause for a moment and give thanks to my dear friend Nicole who saw the email about this little guy and forwarded it on to me. Nicole THANK YOU from the very bottom of my heart. Words will never express our sincere gratitude to you!!

As a result of that email we contacted the family. We exchanged emails, photos and agreed to meet. They were just an hour North and so we made regular trips to get to know him and for him to get to know us.

I can honestly say that within the first 5 minutes we knew, that we knew, he was a GARCIA! Just look at him!

And they knew too! They knew that for a reason none of us could explain they were called to travel half way around the world ~collect our son~ and deliver him to us.

This story is nothing short of a miracle. And no words or amount of details will give God the Glory He so deserves…all I can say is that the Lord has shown our family incredible favor and once again has blessed us beyond all that we could have ever hoped, dreamed or imagined.

Jake is an amazing kid, a terrific little brother and the most perfect completion of our family.

In an effort to get to know her students better, Madison's teacher asked each parent to write a paper and "In a Million Words or Less" share as much about our child as possible.

I love to write and share about my kids so this "paper" was a fun homework assignment for me. :)

In a Million Words or Less

Madison. Madison. Madison.

Out of all 4 of my kids, this assignment was most appropriate for Madison. I will do my best to keep my comments to a “Million Words or Less”. 

Madison is #3 in a family of 4. Until May 19th of this year she was the “baby” of the family. That position has recently been handed down to our new son Jacob (he is 4 and adopted from Russia– but that is another paper).

While Madison LOVED the “baby” position she gladly surrendered it to her new little brother. She is a tender, kind, loving and MOTHERLY big sister.

She looks up to and respects her (not so much) older brother (Ethan) and sister (Sadie).

Madison like all her siblings was also adopted. She though (unlike all of her siblings) does not like to talk about or share with others that she is adopted. She only wants to talk about being a “Garcia”.

Madison is sensational, dramatic, fun, emotional, very raw and real about her feelings. You ALWAYS know where you stand with Madison and what kind of mood she is in. She has been nick named “Hollywood” and has earned that name time and time again. 

Madison is very sensitive and can get her feelings hurt when things don’t quite go as she expected but she has a heart of gold and is quick to forgive. She can be slow to let people into her circle because when she does she loves with her whole being and is loyal beyond words.

She LOVES to read and will read daily without being asked or reminded. She enjoys everything pink, princess, Fancy Nancy or anything frilly and girly. She is our girly girl!

She likes to swim, dance, sing, perform, draw, play games, have play dates and sleepovers with her friends.

She is an interactive and social child. She does not spend much time watching TV or on the computer and although she has a DS she does not play it often.

We are Christians and our walk with the Lord is very important to our family. We attend church regularly, and we are actively involved in the local community as well as communities abroad. It is our hope that we raise all of children with a thankful and GIVING heart.

I hope this summary of our little girl has given you a little insight to her (and us). Please never hesitate to contact me if you have any questions, comments or concerns.

In May Brian had a the privledge of traveling to Haiti with an amazing organization called CARHA.

Brian and some other folks spent 5 hard days in Haiti and countless hours among the survivors of the Earthquake that litterally shook Haiti and the locals to their very core.

We had planned to take Sadie, her bestie and the rest of the Growing Garcia's out for ice cream BUT Sadie had a better idea.

She and Lola and their chauffeur (her daddy) headed of to publix where they bought all the fixin's (nuts, caramel, butterscotch, hot fudge, cherries, whipped cream, bananas, magic shell oh and I almost forgot 2 gallons of ice cream) and we made mile high sundae's for the birthday girl and all to enjoy.

6 years ago today I received THE CALL for this cute little boy named Igor.

It was a Friday afternoon and we had just finished hosting part 1 of our weekend yard sale fundraiser.

My mom and long time friend April were here to help make the fundraiser a HUGE success. By the time the rain came and forced us to close up shop we had already raised well over a THOUSAND dollars.

As we stood in the garage in complete AWE of the generosity of everyone who donated items, everyone who shopped and everyone who prayed we couldn't help but feel the overwhelming presence of the Lord.

Without warning the phone rang and broke the peaceful silence. I looked at caller ID and instantly recognized the 703 #. That was the area code of our adoption agency America World.

I couldn't imagine why they were calling. My Dossier was already in Russia and translated so I knew there were no questions there. I was told not to expect "The Call" until at least December...so I knew it wasn't that. I answered the phone and I heard Leslie (my family coordinator) say " Hello Jen, are you sitting down?"....

Everybody knew that was ALWAYS Leslie's opening line when she was calling with a referral.

All I could muster was "no, please don't say anything until I can sit".

So I sat down and I heard those words "I have your son". My heart leaped to my throat. I couldn't speak, I couldn't breathe, I couldn't move.

I could hear Leslie say "Jen are you there, Jen did you hear me, Jen?"...

It was the most surreal feeling. To be able to hear and feel but not move or speak. Without even seeing his picture or holding him close he had melted my heart and filled it with overflowing emotions.

I managed to get a "yes, I am still here" out and then I asked her to conference Brian so he could think and talk for both of us.

She did and later she sent us these most beautiful pictures...

June 11, 2004 was the day I officially felt like a MOM.

My Miracle Baby

It is with overwhelming joy that I introduce to you….our Jacob!

Many of you know that our boy Ethan has prayed without ceasing for a baby brother since August of 2006. Long after Brian and I gave up on the possibility of adding to our family – Ethan kept praying.

Just recently he began praying specifically that his baby brother would come from Russia. Sadly, the relationship between Russia and the U.S. has been compromised over the years and even more so when the little boy in TN was returned to Russia by the women who adopted him.

Brian did his best to explain to Ethan that shy of a miracle his little brother would not be coming from Russia – if he was even to have a little brother.

So….Ethan prayed for a miracle! He prayed and asked God for a brother from Russia.

Just a few short weeks later I received an email from a long time friend. She had heard of a little boy who was adopted from Russia in November of 2009.

His former family had 2 biological children and felt lead to adopt from Russia. They went through the long process and even traveled to Russia 3 times.

While in Russia they did not feel like they were to be his parents. They didn’t quite “get it” but they knew they were to complete the process and bring him home.

Several weeks after coming home from Russia with him they realized they were not bonding with him as they had with their biological children. They were kind to him. They nurtured and took care of him but they knew they were not his forever family and so they begin seeking placement for him.

I have to pause for a moment and give thanks to my dear friend Nicole who saw the email about this little guy and forwarded it on to me. Nicole THANK YOU from the very bottom of my heart. Words will never express our sincere gratitude to you!!

As a result of that email we contacted the family. We exchanged emails, photos and agreed to meet. They were just an hour North and so we made regular trips to get to know him and for him to get to know us.

I can honestly say that within the first 5 minutes we knew, that we knew, he was a GARCIA! Just look at him!

And they knew too! They knew that for a reason none of us could explain they were called to travel half way around the world ~collect our son~ and deliver him to us.

This story is nothing short of a miracle. And no words or amount of details will give God the Glory He so deserves…all I can say is that the Lord has shown our family incredible favor and once again has blessed us beyond what we could have ever hoped, dreamed or imagined.

Jake is an amazing kid, a terrific little brother and the most perfect completion of our family.

Sadie's VERY BEST FRIEND in all the world is Miss Lola Dunlap. These girls have been friends since diapers and they are INSEPARABLE. Well, that is, until one of their mamma's gets a crazy idea to go away on a vacation or something....(usually that's me!) BUT, this time it was Lola who left for a week and man on man was it rough around here! The girls called each daily ~sometimes twice~ sometimes three times. Needless to say they couldn't wait to see each other upon Lola's sweet return.

My Grammy

My Grammy is one one the most tender, loving and gentle people I know. I just cherish her!!!

As a kid I remember her coming to visit us and at night she would lay with me and tell me the most beautiful stories about the Bible. Her descriptions of Heaven and Jesus were so vivid that the Bible came alive whenever she would speak of it.

As a teen I remember her coming to visit and she had eyes EVERYWHERE. Anything and Everything I did she saw and TOLD. She wasn't one of those keep quiet and brush it under the rug kind of Grandmas. Oh no, she called you out on it and told the people who loved you! (Today, I am most thankful of that!)

As an adult I remember her coming to FL to live with my parents. As she ailed in her health they took care of her. Managing her doctors appointments, medicines, meals and personal care.

Sadly my Grammy suffers from a mental health issue that now requires her to have 24 hour care.

The kids and I would make a point to visit her on a weekly basis and we SO enjoyed those visits....until May of last year. :(

When my Grammy alters her meds or worse decides not to take them she gets very very cranky and she picks one family member to take it out on. For years I escaped that. I was never ever her target. Until May 2009.

I went in for my normal weekly visit and I did not bring her any joy. Only torment and grief. She thought I was doing awful things to my children (whom she loves dearly!). While I knew it was the (lack of) meds talking it still hurt very badly. I left in tears that my grandma didn't just NOT know me ~ she thought I was a bad person.

For a whole year I could not see my Grammy. My parents could, my sister could, my nieces and nephews and even my kids, but not me...

Until today.

Today for the first time in almost a year I got to visit my Grammy! It was beautiful and wonderful. She was happy and at peace. She enjoyed my company and gave me a big tight hug.

Today I saw MY GRAMMY! And oh, how I have missed her so.

GATOR of the month

Our girl Madison was awarded the honor of being GATOR of the month in her class this month. With that came a beautiful award ceremony where she received a big Congratulations from her Principal and Assistant Principal as well as a goody bag filled with fun rewards (like a GATOR pen, and lapel pin and a gift certificate for our favorite pizza place ~~Stevie B's. YUM!)

Before heading back to class she (and we) also got a sweet treat - Our schools famous GIGANTIC chocolate chip cookies and sugar filled kool aide.

So my girl Sadie was up in a tree ~~AGAIN~~ and before she knew it she was sliding down using only her poor tummy as brakes...

Those that know my wild cat won't be all that surprised by her latest injury...but they may be a little grossed out by it.

This is one of the best/worst wounds she's has had too date

While I know she is in pain I think her real hurt is that this tree got the better of her tonight. :-(

And each holiday I *try* to join her at the crafting table, I try to put on my Martha Stuart hat and I try to contribute a least enough to take some credit for the nifty treat.

But each and every holiday ~ I fail miserably!

Pizza Mania...

Ok before I get to the real post...I have to share a confession:

Stevie B's is my **FAVORITE** pizza place! I only "invited" the kids to Stevie B's for a "Pizza Party" so I wouldn't look like a fool going to a kids joint with my big girl friends and gorging myself on their mouth watering pizza buffet.

Nick's Nest and Mommy's Joy "get me" so they indulged me in my splurge and off to Stevie B's we went. 3 Momma's, 11 kids and ummm 15 or so WHOLE pizzas were consumed by our hungry crew...

Oh and I think it might be worthy of mention that 4 year old Nick ate more than every other person in our party and I am absolutely SURE Stevie B's lost LOTS of money on us...

I'm thinking, they just might lock the doors the next time they see us coming...

Celebrate Literacy

This week was Celebrate Literacy week at school and to close out the week long celebration all of the kids were able to dress up today like one of the character's in their favorite book - as long as they carried the book with them all day.

Ethan chose to be a football player from his Family Huddle book.

Surprise! Surprise! Madison picked Cinderella. Bet none of you saw that coming? :~)

Sadie was a puuuurrrrfect cat.

Coral too had fun dressing up and carrying her book to class.

Truth be told I really don't know!

Ethan was invited to a friends birthday party which had quite a unique theme. It was a "boys only" party and all the little men were given a tool belt, some tools and a bunch of appliances to take apart.

All the boys ~but especially my boy~ was in heaven!!!

And since that day he has devoured as many appliances as we can deliver. I have even stooped to walking the neighborhood on trash days and once found a TV for him.

Our neighbors have brought him items, his aunts, uncles, his grandparents and friends from school.

It's been an exciting new hobby for this kid and I am not sure he'll outgrow it any time soon.

I guess as long as he stays away from my working appliances ~~its all is good. :)

My most favorite tree in my Tropical Paradise is my Gardenia Tree.

and this poor baby got infected with an absolute horrible fungus

The branches and leaves have a dark black gook caked on them

it seemed like it was screaming for me to just Euthanize it

but instead Madison and I spent the day scrubbing it with a tooth brush, wash cloth and warm soapy water

and now hoping this beloved tree of mine has just a little fight left in it...
